Chino Valley Football Drops Season Opener, Chino Girls Soccer Splits at Invite

Chino Valley was the first local football team in 2023 to play under the Friday night lights. The Cougars journeyed to the far reaches of Arizona to face Page. Game number one of the season, however, did not go Chino’s way as they lost 42-13. Kai Holmes had two rushing touchdowns for the Cougars. Coach Ricky Herrera reports the Cougars suffered several injuries during the course of the game. Chino Valley will try for win number one this Thursday when they go up to the NAU Skydome to take on Kingman Academy. In other Chino Valley sports action from the weekend, the girls soccer team began their season at the Longhorn Invitational at Payson. The Lady Cougars lost their opening game to the defending 2-A state champs Northland Prep 5-2, then went on to shutout Snowflake 3-0 and beat Round Valley 3-1. In the final game of the invitational, Chino Valley lost to St. John’s 2-1. Cheyanne Bannan notched two goals during the weekend.


Rounding out the weekend scoreboard, the Yavapai College Women's Soccer Team edged out number five ranked Pima 2-1. Ciara Webbe and Julie Reyes were the goal scorers. The Embry-Riddle Volleyball Team got swept by Menlo and Corban at the Southern Oregon Tournament. Dalia Haase posted ten kills in the Corban match.
