Forest Service to Implement Closures at Thumb Butte and Granite Mountain

1/30/23

Prescott National Forest officials are giving climbers notice that if they want to go climbing at Granite Mountain or Thumb Butte to do it before Wednesday.

Both sites will be closed starting this Wednesday through July 15th due to the annual nesting of the peregrine falcons. The closures have been in place now for over 20 years and are necessary for the peregrines to successfully breed and raise their young.

Some trails will remain open such as Trail 33 at Thumb Butte and Trail 261 in Granite Basin. Maps of the closed areas are available on the Prescott National Forest website and Facebook page.
