Wildfire Damage Increases Risk of Flooding

7/28/23

Once the Grapevine and Racetrack Fires have been put out, they will leave behind another problem for residents of those areas . . . Flooding. Officials with the Yavapai County Flood Control District say because of the charred landscape and loss of vegetation from a wildfire, the ground is unable to absorb moisture. This means when thunderstorms hit, those areas are more prone to flooding. That risk can last for years. It’s a good idea for residents in flood-prone areas to get flood insurance. Also, you can pick up free sandbags at fire stations throughout Yavapai County, though you do have to fill them yourself.
